The Rich Taste of Sophia
Loren
|
A review from Eating Out with Oliver,
Yorkshire Evening Post.

"I Think I will have
snails," said a nearby precocious tot, with as much conviction... as a three
year old. Maybe informal Italian restaurants have that effect on youngsters.
They certainly feel comfortable enough to play to the gallery. Casa
Romana is a cosy restaurant in Harrogate's culinary quarter, vying with the
less intimate Gianni's across the road, and a French and Indian on either
side. Fishing nets hang from the ceiling, wine racks cling to the
whitewashed walls, and the standard Three Tenors tape pumps out from the
speakers. Through a semi-circle hatch you can see the chefs at work. I
like that - the ability to see what is going on. There is a varied
menu pandering to just about every taste - pasta, pizza, steaks, fish, chicken,
veal. "What's Pollo Sophia Loren?" I asked the waiter, glancing up at
the blackboard. Spring chicken perhaps? "Chicken with a brandy cream, and prawn
sauce," came the reply. Very rich - yes, I think she is. Hors d'ouvres
was a good tasty starter with a good selection of Italian hams and salamis.
Seafood salad was substantial, but only contained squid, mussels and prawns
with lettuce, although the sauce was nice and light. Pollo a la creme
was chicken breast in a mushroom, wine and cream sauce and was tender and
succulent. A side salad and saute potatoes were extra - but the potatoes were a
delight and done perfectly. Scampi provencale - in tomatoes, herbs and
served on a bed of rice - was equally satisfying. Again, the potatoes and side
salad were plumped for as the accompaniment. Pizzas are massive with a
wide selection of toppings, and tasted fresh and light - the restaurant owner
insisted on the personal touch of cutting it into quarters. There is a good
selection of sweets from a range of ice creams to the delightful diet-busting
chocolate fudge cake. We had a carafe of the house Italian white wine
(£9.60) which seemed to last forever, and was crisp and not too dry,
although perhaps a shade pricey as a "house" selection. A meal for four
came to £60, but you can eat much cheaper if you concentrate on pizza and
pasta. Click here to see some pictures of our
